Return of the Chipmunk.

We found Opie on the bookcase under the living room window, peering intently behind a potted plant. Further investigation revealed a hiding chipmunk. The Husband blocked the various avenues of escape except for one leading to the humane trap. The chipmunk was then prodded with a pencil into the humane trap and released into the woods.

A mere four hours later, the (same?) chipmunk was back behind the same potted plant. The same routine for capture yielded the same results.

The next day. Same, same and same. The first time, the chipmunk paced frantically when he found himself in the trap. By the third time he busied himself eating the tender vittles that were the trap's bait. The trap's instructions say to open the trap and allow the critter to escape on its own (as opposed to dumping him out); gives them a sense of accomplishment and reduces their panicky state, or something . This time, the chipmunk refused to leave the trap until he had polished off all the Tender Vittles. He then strolled off into the woods, never to return. Hopefully.
